Author / Autor: Duncan Swan; Year of Publication / Erscheinungsjahr: 2020; Page Count (Print-Version) / Seitenzahl (Print-Version): 476; Genre: Dystopia, Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi

English Covertext:

There is no stopping it.

The Cloud is armageddon, steamrolling the world at a walking pace.

Day 0. From the wreckage of a research facility in Switzerland, a plume of toxic smoke and ash pours into the sky, forming an impenetrable cloud that is slowly smothering the world in darkness. As Europe disappears beneath the Cloud, a squad of United States Marines are sent on a desperate mission to find out what went wrong, and how to undo it before it’s too late. Venturing into a cold, dark world, the Marines must travel deep under the Cloud, with no comms, no backup, and no idea of what they will face.

Day 89. Half a world away, the Cloud has reached the East Coast of the U.S. With nowhere to run and no hope of survival, the American people have descended into madness, turning on themselves and each other. From the sidelines, an old Tennessee sheriff watches as his country unravels. But he can’t bring himself to take the easy way out. Quitting isn’t in his DNA. So when one of his deputies asks him to help protect her family, he leads them west, chasing a miracle-a rumor of an old nuclear bunker that just may be their only hope for survival. Because if the Cloud doesn’t kill them, what’s hiding in the dark will.

My review:

Because the start sounds quite negativ: I liked the book. ;)

Stories in which hope seems to be missing completely are not exactly my favourites, and especially in these times I found it hard to let myself be immersed in the story. The setting is very bleak and gloomy – figuratively and literally – and especially in the beginning lots of new things come up that kill every burgeoning hope or ideas for a positive ending.

I also need a main character (or a few of them) who I like and whom I can follow through the story. In this book there are a lot of changes in characters and POVs – partly because the story is told in two different points in time, but also because some of those people just die, even after a few chapters of the story told from their perspective.

This might sound like I didn’t especially like the book, but actually it’s praise for the book, because still, in spite of these obstacles, I liked it and was submerged in the story from the very beginning.

All of the characters are very interesting and different from each other, even if not always likeable and surely not without flaws, the story is gripping and we always get to know more about the Cloud and the situation in the world, the characters‘ stories, which initially seem to be very independent of each other, become more and more interwoven. And even if it is very gloomy, the image of humanity quite negative, and there barely seems to be any hope, if at all, the author still made it suspenseful enough, with enough variety and a thread that binds everything together, that I finished the book very quickly after starting properly.

One thing that bothered me a bit from time to time was the very detailed or technical descriptions and names for vehicles and weapons. I think it’s probably better this way than the other way around, when the author has no idea what they’re talking about, but me, not knowing much about these things, found it difficult from time to time to associate an image or a meaning to some letter combination, even if there was a brief description or explanation at one point.

But that’s all I have to criticise, apart from the fact, that one or two times I noticed the authors language in some specific figures of speech, that several characters used. ;) Apart from that I really liked it and am also impressed that at no point I had problems remembering who everyone was, despite the high number of characters.

The end of the book is just one big cliffhanger, so I’m very curious how the story will continue and am looking forward to Volume 2.

My Rating: 8/10 Punkten

Conclusion: Great book, very suspensful, very well written, interesting and diverse characters, very dark and gloomy. Looking forward to volume 2!

Meine Meinung:

English blurb / covertext:

When her mother unceremoniously dumps her at Camp Mapplewood for the summer, Emma Lane’s hopes of repairing their fractured relationship are gone with the wind. Now she’s stuck in the wilderness facing her worst fears. Trees? Terrifying. Spiders? Even worse. And don’t even get Emma started on how she feels about camp activities. But Emma’s got a plan, and she will do anything in her power to get kicked out of camp, from sleeping in to playing practical jokes on her fellow campers. Yet when Emma draws the attention of her illusive and attractive camp counselor Vivian Black, she has to come to terms with the fact that how her summer starts isn’t necessarily how it might end. Will Vivian be the key to unlocking Emma’s fears once and for all?

My review:

To be honest, my expectations hadn’t been very high, and it has been a while since I read a book falling under teen romance, but against expectations I really liked it!

Emma is a very interesting protagonist, who I really started to like quickly despite her grumpiness and pranks. The other main characters are all well thought out and have their own personalities, fears and hopes – the engergetic Gwen who instantly clings to Emma; Vivian whose intentions and thoughts remain a mystery for a long time; Julie, the sweet wife of the camp director and cook; Lauren who seems to be like every other bully in the beginning; Walter as another camp group leader and brother of Vivian.

I especially liked how real all of the characters and their actions based on their personalities and backgrounds were, and how realistic and helpful some topics were incorporated – Emmas experiences in the Camp when she was 12 may seem insignificant to some, but can create a trauma; how depression can affect a person; what friendship and trust means; that a crush doesn’t just excuse every action; what family means, that related by blood doesn’t necessarily means unconditional love, hat family doesn’t always have to be a blood relation.

It was also nice that while there was enough drama to keep it suspenseful and interesting, it’s still on a good level and gets resolved, (almost) no „everybody dies and everything falls apart because nobody just talks to each other“ à la Shakespeare.

A teen romance can be very entertaining after all, I really enjoyed reading the book and wanted to know how the story continues while reading – and I giggled constantly and had to laugh out loud a few times as well.

Conclusion: Just a beautiful story, talks about some important topics in a great way + found family + LGBT+. Very entertaining and funny.

I was able to read this book as a review copy, thanks to NetGalley, House of Capet Publishing / Xpresso Book Tours and the author Lily Velez.

Author: Lily Velez; Published: 2016; Publisher: House of Capet Publishing; Number of Pages: 276; Genre: Romance, LGBT+, Historical, Fantasy; Price: Paperback: 12,57€, eBook: 2,99€

My Rating: 10/10 Points (5/5 stars)

Summary:

„It’s the year 1802 in Avignon, France.

Noah Capet has spent most of his young life living simple and unvaried days in the hushed countryside of southern France. Quiet, reserved, and diffident, his preference for existing is to do so in solitude, keeping to himself both in town and on his family’s farm–a predilection that’s altogether disrupted when a newcomer to town by the name of Jeremie Perreault begins an unremitting quest to befriend him.

Jeremie is everything Noah is not. Charismatic and gregarious, he leaves a trail of charmed admirers in his wake wherever he goes. Expressive and idealistic, he talks without end about his deep love for old books and his spirited dream to one day travel the world on a literary pilgrimage.

Over the course of a single summer, the two form an unlikely friendship, but just as quickly as it develops, it soon entirely dissolves as they’re forced to face the truth of what has unexpectedly emerged between them.

Lavender in Bloom is a tender and tragic coming-of-age story about first love and self-discovery, and a poignant reminder that time is fleeting and always takes with it the choices we’re too afraid to make.“

My Opinion:

Ooooooh my. So many feelings! Such great characters. A few days ago I finished the novel and don’t you think I’m over it, I’m still feeling all these emotions. But from the start.

When I requested the book, I somehow missed the fact, that it’s set in the past? Or forgot it until I finally started to actually read it? Especially because the story wouldn’t make any sense in the present? I have no idea what I was thinking – however, I was mildly surprised when I started reading and found it to be set in 1802. :D In the beginning I was a bit sceptical about it, but very soon I started to love it.

The story is so pure. The main character, Noah, is a character I have never read about in any other book before. He is so reserved, only talks if he needs to, so happy with just being by himself and with the animals on the farm, so quickly so unsure around other people. And so loveable, so amazing, so kind, so pure – I just had to love him, Lily Velez gave me no other choice, from the very start on. Just for this character it’s already worth reading the book.

Then there is Jeremie. As the summary says – he’s quite the opposite, being charismatic and open and so lively and can’t stop talking about his books – and I fell in love with him just as much as with Noah. These two have one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever read – so true and pure and forbidden (at that time) and strong nevertheless.

Then there are all the other characters – Noahs family and Jeremies family. One to love and one to hate. And within Noahs family so many different characters, especially his sisters – Camilla, the youngest, whom I didn’t like in the beginning but then found myself to like her more and more as the story progressed, and Margaux, such a great character as well, just as her relationship to and her understanding of Noah.

Lily Velez is an amazing writer. I love her style of writing – so easy to imagine everything, and she has a talent for making the reader feel exactly what her characters are feeling. The story is very gripping (it made me miss my bus stops five (5!!!) times, can you believe that), has some very beautiful and pure parts, some dangerous ones, some sad ones, some funny ones – everything is there. Backstories, historic accuracy as far as I can judge, character development, and oh, did I mention all the feelings? I laughed, I cried, I loved, I mourned, I was angry and happy, and sometimes all at once.

I just want to add a quote I especially loved – Jeremie is talking about Noah’s quiteness:

„Different, yes, but not at all exasperating. In my experience, I’ve found that our differences are what make life fascinating. Imagine, for instance, if all the flowers on your farm looked completely identical from one to the other. What beauty would there be in that? None, I should think. It’s the same with the human race. Our differences shouldn’t divide us. They should be cause to celebrate. They should be something we marvel at. Besides, if everyone in the world only talked, then who would be left to listen?“  (eBook Pos. 574, Chapter 7)

Conclusion:

I’d like to conclude my review with a quote from NetGalley, which describes it very well:

„A gripping and heartbreaking tragic love story that examines friendship, family, fear, and […] the finality of loss. With writing that exudes striking beauty and poetic elegance, Lavender in Bloom is an exceptionally emotional and unforgettable read.“

And also, such amazing characters, so many emotions, I can’t.

Just read it.

I was able to read this book as a review copy, thanks to NetGalley, the Less Than Three Press and the author Francis Gideon.

Author: Francis Gideon; Published: 2016; Publisher: Less Than Three Press; Number of Pages: 78; Genre: Romance, LGBT+, Fantasy; Price: eBook: 2,99€

My Rating: 6/10 Points (3/5 stars)

Summary:

„When Justin’s best friend drags him to a track meeting, Justin thinks he’s just going for the distraction. Having been dumped by his girlfriend, and still in the closet as bisexual, running allows him to forget about his problems. Everything works out—until his mother donates his favourite pair of sneakers to the local charity.

As Justin tries to find his old sneakers, he stumbles on a pair of identical running shoes—and learns too late they are simultaneously cursed and enchanted by the virtues of anger. Now, stuck in a sudden vortex of rage and passion, Justin is forced to trust Vipin, the only person who seems to have answers to his many questions.“

My Opinion:

This quite short novel is a very cute story but also has some very interesting insights in the LGBT+ community. The main character, Justin, struggles with not having told his family about being bisexual and the misunderstandings of this sexuality. But the main story is about him meeting Vipin by accident and falling in love with him and how their relationship evolves – fueled by Justins anger, which is conjured by his cursed shoes.

I felt that their relationship was evolving a bit too fast, that their feelings were too strong for knowing each other so little, and in general it all just happened very quickly. Also I felt like I didn’t really get to know Vipin. I think it would have been positive for the story if everything had been given a bit more time.

But anyway, I liked it. And apart from Justin and Vipin it had some interesting stories around them – Justins best friend, them wanting to join the running team, Justins family and especially his sister – she has to be my favourite character – and even so for quite some time now, taking other books into consideration as well. She appears very briefly (unfortunately), only two (?) times in the whole story, but she is great.

Conclusion: A nice love story, very fast, would maybe need some more time – but for the length it has it’s good, cute and well-written.

Author: B. Kevin Tirrell; Published: 2016; Publisher: Langdon Street Press; Number of Pages: 410; Genre: Romance, LGBT+; Price: $15.95-21.99

My Rating: 6/10 Points (3/5 stars)

Summary:

„Rusty Jackson spent years crafting the perfect life with his high school sweetheart, Jenny; his own construction company, and a house he built with his bare hands. When an oddly intriguing police officer named Jason Lane shows up bearing tragic news, Rusty’s world is turned upside down. Months later when he encounters Jason again, both men find themselves in a surprisingly different spot. While Rusty doesn’t fully understand his attraction, and Jason fears falling for a confused straight guy, they play an electrifying game of push and pull, hoping to find their way to happily ever after. When they run into a family foe in Las Vegas, Rusty’s confidence is tested. Can Rusty wrestle down his insecurities for Jason or are some habits too powerful to break?“

My Opinion:

Yes, it is just one more love story, but it has some depth in it – several problems occurring due to the fact that the two main characters falling in love are both men and have very different experiences with this and their ways of handling it differ very much as well.

I liked the novel – you don’t have characters as amazing as here that often. They are both really well written, so real and vivid and so lovable. But not only the two main characters – they both have a very good friend (one female, one male) and we get to know them as well. I found it very interesting to have one character who is fully confident in being gay and one who isn’t aware of his attraction to men at all.

The story is completely cute and I was so emotionally engaged that I missed my bus stop not once, but twice. Oops. But still there were some things bothering me – firstly, it partly felt a bit like… fanfiction? I don’t know how to describe it, but the niveau of the writing wasn’t the highest all the time. I mean, it was very well written, but at some points…

Then of course the story wasn’t something groundbreaking, but I could have lived with that. But than we have that sort of love triangle thing? Rusty’s best friend has been in love with him for, like, forever, and I really felt that to be unnecessary and annoying, eventhough I really liked her.

And another thing that really bothered me – when Rusty or other characters start to speak or think about his romantic/sexual orientation, they started to say that yes, he probably is gay. But. Before the novel starts he was married to a woman and they all mention like a thousand times that he really truly loved her. So for heaven’s sake, no, he is not gay! He might be bisexual or pansexual or whatever, but no, he is not gay, otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to fall in love with a woman. This might seem to be a minor critic point, but it really bothered me and I think that this representation and clarification is really important. And there was some missing logic because of this later on.

Conclusion: A very cute and nice story, amazing characters, very emotional engaging, interesting, but had a very unnecessary love triangle thing, had some mistakes and sometimes felt a bit not-so-well-written.
